Optimizing Active Adult Residences: The KWA Approach

At KWA Construction, we understand the importance of creating living spaces that meet and exceed modern active adults’ expectations. As a leading general contractor in the multifamily sector, we are committed to delivering innovative, high quality and thoughtfully designed residences that accommodate the unique needs of senior living communities in Texas.

Understanding the Active Adult Resident

Active adults, often referred to as ‘seniors,’ are a distinct and dynamic group. Usually fifty-five years and older, these individuals lead active lifestyles and require residential spaces that not only reflect their energy but also promote their health and foster a sense of community. This market segment is growing rapidly. There is an increasing demand for senior living residences that can accommodate their particular requirements.

Designing for active adults goes beyond simply building structures. It is about understanding their lifestyle needs and translating those into thoughtful architectural designs. At KWA, we are not just constructing buildings. We are building homes that contribute positively to the quality of life for our active adult residents.

Designing for Comfort, Convenience, and Connection

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to retirement communities in Texas; many different types cater to specific needs or desires. Developers and architects are designing homes that go beyond structural considerations, where older adults can live independently but take advantage of community services and digital technology.

Safety and accessibility are pivotal in the designs by incorporating wider hallways and doorways, easy-to-reach fixtures, adequate lighting and non-slip flooring. Additionally, amenities such as fitness centers, communal gardens and shared social spaces are imperative to encourage physical activity and promote social interactions within this sector.

Spacious settings with natural light and unobstructed views from the inside where residents spend most of their time help create a sense of peace and well-being. Furthermore, factors such as public transport access, proximity to medical facilities, and the availability of grocery stores and other shopping outlets nearby play a pivotal role in residents’ quality of life.

A comprehensive design approach of comfort, convenience, technology and strategic location all need to be considered to ensure a holistic living experience for senior living residents.

Spotlight Projects: Avenida Carrollton and Columbia Renaissance Square

In every project we undertake, our dedication to excellence is unmistakably apparent. Take Avenida Carrollton, for example, a resort-inspired active adult community located in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Carrollton. Designed with a “Texas modern” architectural flair by Meeks + Partners and REES Associates, the stylish apartment homes and cottages of Avenida Carrollton will boast contemporary finishes such as designer flooring, quartz countertops, spacious bedrooms, walk-in closets, step-in showers, and private patios and balconies.

Another example of well thought-out living spaces for active adults is Columbia Renaissance Square, developed by Columbia Residential in Fort Worth. Designed by JHP Architecture, Columbia Renaissance Square is a three-story, 95,015-square-foot building with open floor plans, full-size kitchens, ENERGY STAR® appliances and designer-inspired 42-inch espresso-finished cabinets. High, 9-foot ceilings, vinyl plank flooring, ceramic tile in the bathrooms, and carpeted bedrooms add a touch of luxury and comfort, while bathroom grab bars enhance safety.

Community amenities at active adult residences, including both Avenida and Columbia Renaissance Square, are so luxurious that regardless of age, would be a dream to live in. Amenities ranging from screening theaters, wine-tasting rooms and creative arts studios to pickleball courts, serenity gardens, pools and spas, create the optimal living environment for seniors.
