KWA Construction Vice President Brian Webster was recently invited to be a guest writer for Construction Today where he shared his thoughts on senior housing trends. Over the years, he has seen changes in construction and design trends and also changes in what types of amenities residents prefer. Brian has worked on multiple senior housing projects in varying roles with KWA, including Churchill Estates at Lake Highlands, McDermott Crossing, Hillside West and Heritage Village.
He believes there are three main factors driving senior living construction trends. Baby Boomers place a high value on a sense of community and will look for a residence that will make it easy for them to main relationships with friends and family. High-end amenities are a must. This demographic is looking for amenities that go beyond a pool and fitness center. Seniors also have more personal and financial freedom, whether or not they will have to “buy-into” a senior living community will determine where they will choose to reside.
